Wow, the cherry blossom season is upon us in a sea of pink. Are you smiling yet from all this sunshine? Our hyper-social bee squad has been buzzing around town, even venturing across the border to bring you dedicated event news. Like our Elfin Bee, who went to Seattle to explore Washington's wine.

Overindulgence, meet Taste Washington

Even with the extra hour, thanks to the VIP ticket, I barely put a dent on the selection of fine food and wines at the 16th annual Taste Washington

The two-day event is the largest single-region wine and food event in the United States, so it comes as no surprise that dilly-dallying isn't the most strategical approach.

Upon being reminded of its occurence, I quickly planned my weekend excursion across the border. To say that I was eager to explore Washington's wine and sample tasty bites from more than 65 of the top restaurants in Seattle and the Puget Sound region would be an understatement.

First step: find transportation

In collaboration with Heritage Vancouver and the Museum of Vancouver, grassroots organization East of Main presents a history-themed tweetup at the Goldcorp Centre for the Arts on April 11, 2013.

With the theme "Journey to Now", the #EastVanLove tweetup, now in its eight edition, promises a multi-ethnic collage of adverse and uplifting stories that reveal the honest authenticity of East Vancouver’s heritage as an inclusive, culturally rich community with a vibrant and historic past.

After a stroke, rebirth as a comic artist

Iva Gruden
Mar 25th, 2013

It was a brief, terrifying stroke at the young age of 29 that prompted Paris-born artist Alex (he has a last name, but prefers to remain mononymous) the focus in his life passion as a cartoon artist.

Until that moment, Alex had tried his hand at just about everything: former long-term technician at a France TV, a graphic designer, A-class swimmer, karate kid and model (his ad for banana flavoured condoms caused quite a stir), law school, computer science and acting.

Then came the sudden stroke: doctors predicted he never to walk, talk, read or write again. But betraying all expectations, Alex not only did all this, but found a new meaning to his life: to make people smile with his drawings.

Spring has arrived, and this bright drink will help you enjoy the sunny days on the patio. This cocktail hails from Lynchburg, Tennessee, a city that sees more sunshine than rain. Best of all, it's a breeze to make.

Ingredients:

1 Oz – Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7

1 Oz– Sour Mix*

1 Oz – Triple Sec**

Top off with of 7-up/Sprite

Directions:

Fill your glass with ice and pour the ingredients in. Give it a quick stir to mix the ingredients, and garnish with a lemon slice and cherry. This cocktail is typically served in a Collin’s glass. For a trendy touch, serve it in a mason jar.

*To make the sour mix, use 1 part fresh lemon juice, 1 part lime, 1 part sugar, and 1 part water.

** For a higher alcoholic content, use Cointreau (40 per cent ABV) instead of triple sec (35 per cent ABV). Cointreau also has a more refined flavour.

Take an imagined journey across the Pacific as heard from inside a shipping container in The Voyage: Boca del Lupo, part of Micro Performance Series 2013, March 27 to 30.

715,195 laden shipping containers arrived in the Port of Vancouver in 2011 including 2,877,676 metric tonnes of ‘Household Goods’, 1,160,636 metric tonnes of ‘Construction & Materials’, 355 930,610 metric tonnes of ‘Industrial, Auto and Vehicle Parts’ and 1,548,748 metric tonnes of ‘Others.’

Included in ‘Others’ are some of the 600 individuals that the RCMP estimates are smuggled into the country each year. The Voyage takes the audience across the Pacific, inside one of those shipping containers. Presented inside an actual shipping container placed on the old loading ramp on Granville Island, participants embark on this 20‐minute sonic journey that takes place completely in the dark.

Unstuck challenges old notions about love, marriage and monogamy

Picture a modern condo, a sleek office desk behind a lavish queen size bed, adjacent to Le Corbusier le grand sofa set. Located opposite to a mini bar area complete with classic 1950’s bar stool sensually lit with industrial style silver metal lights hung from the ceiling.  A clean cut man in a blue dress shirt and jeans is pacing around the room, irritably typing on his laptop while looking over his lover who is deeply asleep in a beautiful tuxedo on the sofa. The tension is thick, and we are only just getting started.

As the story unfolds, this night -- marred by a very loud protest against gay marriage outside their windows -- happens to be the couple’s 10 year’s anniversary.

They have not had sex in six months, and despite the love that runs deep between them, the gulf is ever widening to the point all communication is a form of complaint.

All of these back and forth arguing and passive aggressive avoidance was interrupted by the arrival of a hot young stud that was meant as a present to spice up their love life.

I arrived at the Auto Form car dealership with my hair coifed in sexy-layered blowouts, wearing a pink silk lame dress.

Under the iconic East Van sign, my eyes lit up at the array of lust-worthy cars like a GTE Mustang and a Red Maserati.

Who was I kidding? I was purely there for the fashion and people-watching. And boy did I get doses of both on Friday night, March 15, at 1885 Clark Drive.
