"A child not raised by their mother will be raised by the world -- Asiyefunzwa na mamae hunfuzwa." This African proverb, translated from Swahili, encompassed the sentiment and purpose in the room of the Visual Space Gallery in Southeast False Creek last Friday evening, June 7.

Randy Plett, in conjunction with Central City Rotary presented Inocent, Etc.  The gallery was host to a fundraising art exhibition showcasing the beautiful photographs created by 25 children living in an orphanage in Tanzania, East Africa.

All proceeds going back to the orphanage would meet immediate needs for food and medicine for the children. Randy's own remarkable photographs of the orphanage were also included in the exhibition.  Each photograph displayed was labeled with the name and age of the child that created it.

1)Tableau + Forage 2) line up at event 3) Stoneboat 2011 Pinot Gris + BC Halibut Carpaccio

I found myself last week at the 9th Annual Chef Meets BC Grape event at the Vancouver Convention Centre, not knowing what to expect: with 95 wineries pouring more than 350 wines, it was a daunting feat for even the most determined wine taster.

If swirling, sipping, spitting, starving and scurrying is your game, then maybe you made it through all of the wines in the 2.5 hours that were allotted. I, on the other hand, opted for socializing, snapping photos, snacking and savouring instead!

Over 1,000 people gathered at the 'March Against Monsanto' Vancouver rally outside the Vancouver Art Gallery on March 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., chanting, as they marched to Roger’s Arena, demanding their food sovereignty, and the right to know what they’re putting into their bodies.

The international movement 'March Against Monsanto' spread like a flame to over 36 countries. 300 plus cities participated in organized marches  to raise awareness about the detrimental impact of genetically modified organisms (GMO), and stop the empire building of GMO food producer Monsanto.

It was a very positive vibe with people from all walks of life holding up signs of protest. Highlights include a very rousing speech by Mr. Tony Beck of GE Free BC, and live rap performance titled “Monsantrocity” by Swami G, which has been seen by over 36,000 people on youtube since Saturday May 25.

Last Thursday a dozen of Vancouver's top Chefs piled into the Pan Pacific with a small team, and hundreds of small plates waiting to be filled. The BC Hospitality Foundation and the Wines of Chile partnered up to throw an elegant evening of food and wine, known as Dish N' Dazzle.

Hoards of seemingly famished (but probably just overzealous) guests swarmed each table, forcing the Chefs to be quick on their feet. As expected, some were more successful than others at catering to the crowd's pace, but some were rightfully slower as they prepared more intricate dishes.

BC Grape meet Chef, Chef meet BC Grape...as if they didn't already know each other.

With the amazing BC VQA wines we have and the desire from so many Chefs to source their products locally, why not take this opportunity to celebrate the partnership between the two?

The 9th annual ChefmeetsBCGrape is this largest annual tasting of BC VQA wines in Vancouver and will be held on Wednesday, June 5th at the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre East (999 Canada Place).

Sommeliers, aficionados and wine lovers will explore 95 wineries pouring more than 350 award-winning wines. They will also have the opportunity to chat directly with the winemakers about the craft behind "creating local wines with international appeal".

A belly full of chicken wings

What is the size of two chubby fingers, varies in spiciness and is often eaten during the Superbowl? Chicken wings.

Love them or hate them, there is no denying that they are a staple food in the life of many - the comfort food that surpasses Mac 'n' Cheese. Whether you like them nose trickling hot, or you prefer them coated in sugary goodness, most pubs and restaurants will have something that suits your palate. While they vary in taste, they also vary in texture, quality, juiciness, flavour intensity and general degree of love.

Although I'm not notorious for being a chicken wing lover, opting for a juicy burger or onion rings as my pub food of choice, I'm forever keen on a challenge, especially when it involves unusual adaptations of a usual food item. Enter, Vancouver Foodster's Chicken Wing Challenge. When Richard asked me to join him on a media tour to taste a few of them out, I jumped at the opportunity, not knowing what was in store.
