Come with me to Spanish Mass

Steve Venegas
Apr 13th, 2009

While most of the Lower Mainland was enjoying the long weekend, going on Easter Egg hunts and consuming more chocolate than the human endocrine system is equipped to cope with, Christians all across Vancouver were going to church to celebrate the resurrection of their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Now, being Hispanic (equal parts Ecuadoran and Chilean), I was raised a Roman Catholic, and there are certain times of the year where the good old-fashioned Catholic guilt kicks in. Then the compulsion to sit in a room with strangers for an hour begins to look attractive, or rather, more attractive than feeling bad for not going.

You see, I look at being Catholic like my Jewish friends look at being Jewish. You're usually born into it, and even if you don't really follow the dogma, you're still part of the club. (See: Lapsed Catholic).

Billy the Kid: From Singing Into Laptop to LA Record Deal

Billy the Kid (aka Billy Pettinger) is hitting the road yet again. The young punk-rock front-woman come solo folkster is embarking on a cross Canada tour in support of her first solo album. But the making of the albums was a journey in itself.

Punk Rock Hairstylist's "Chop Shop" Premiers Today

When you look at Daniel Hudon, chances are you wouldn't think he's the type to own a salon. With his full-sleeve arm tattoos, slick hair and rock-a-billy fashion sense, he looks like he'd be more at home in a mosh pit than a beauty shop. Or on a Reality TV show.

But that's just where you'll find him and the rest of the crew from the Chop Shop, Graville's rock and roll hair salon, with the new "docu-soap" that premiers February 4th on the Slice Network of the same name.

A Man With a Mustache, A Man Without A Mustache

It separates the men from the boys. It's a sign of wisdom and virility. It harkens back to a day when being a Macho Man wasn't necessarily a bad thing. I'm talking facial hair.

Vamping with Venegas

What is it about vampires that gets peoples' blood pumping? Is it the flawless features? The eternal youth? Their seductive, yet dangerous nature? Whatever the answer may be, there is definitely one group that goes gaga for the tall, dark and toothy: teenage girls. Or rather, Tweenaged. Those girls between the ages of 11-14.

When a comic gem is discovered, the glimmer is usually bright enough to catch the interest of the masses.Take for example 8bit Theater. The long running strip dealing with the misadventures of Final Fantasy 2 sprites has managed to gather enough of a following and reputation for Brian Clevinger to make the jump from cyberspace to the real world.

She may not strike you as a the type to go out in little more than her knickers and bra, but when Voodoo Pixie hits the stage the pint-sized dynamo wears just that. The burlesque stage, that is. The once popular performance art has been seeing a resurgence in the last few years, and Vancouver is in the forefront.
