The Vigil: "Freedom and peace, please"

« prevnext »
Emad Manshouri (pictured above) wears a black ribbon with a green stripe through its centre. "The green is for the movement and the black is for the people who have died for it. Manshouri was one of thousands who gathered quietly outside Vancouver Art Gallery last night, lighting candles and making the symbol of peace with their fingers in a powerful show of solidarity with friends and loved ones in Iran.

Speaking to the crowd later, Liberal MP Bob Rae said: "We Canadians are unavoidably in the world...As Iranians you are teaching us about what we owe each other. You are teaching us about what it means to be human. We bear witness to tragedy, we bear witness to suffering and we know that by standing together, we can best overcome it...We shall overcome."
