news1130. A local volunteer policing group is calling for tougher sentences for chronic offenders. Members of the Collingwood Community Policing Centre have been monitoring court cases for months, saying repeat offenders get little more than a slap on the wrist.

news1130. A convicted child molester who police say is a high risk to the community has been released from jail, and is now living in Abbotsford. Twenty-seven year old Benjamin Corey Hart served four years in jail after being convicted of kidnapping and sexual assault.

cbc. Police testifying at Robert Pickton’s first-degree murder trial in New Westminster say no evidence was found at the family farm to link Pickton’s younger brother, Dave, to any crime. Robert Pickton is on trial for six counts of murder.

cbc. Sixteen small communities in northeastern Saskatchewan have declared themselves local emergency zones because of rising floodwaters. Floodwaters are at near record levels in some areas and hundreds of people have been evacuated.

news1130. The skills of a local pilot are being credited for saving his own life. A member of the Fraser Blues flying team was forced to make an emergency landing after two planes clipped wings at Langley airport.

news1130. Vancouver police are looking for two men in their teens or early 20s, after a woman was beaten and robbed at the 29th Avenue SkyTrain station. The woman’s injuries are severe. Police have located a stolen vehicle believed to have been used by the suspects.

cbc. Dozens of California sea lions have drowned at a BC fish farm. The general manager of Creative Salmon fish farm in Tofino Inlet says it appears the sea lions chewed through netting designed to keep them out of the fish farm, got under the shark guard, then got stuck.

cbc. A Canadian woman is among the dead after a shooting rampage at Virginia Tech. Jocelyne Couture-Nowak was a teacher at the campus. The gunman killed 32 people before killing himself.

yahoo. Surprisingly strong gains last week have some investors believing the Dow Jones industrial average could close above the 13,000 mark for the first time. However, many market watchers are doubtful the Dow will show the same strength this week, as last.

yahoo. The 2008 US presidential debates will be online. For the first time ever, online-only debates are being planned. These cyber debates are expected to happen next fall.

cbc. In France, voters are choosing a new president. Voter turnout is said to be high as the French choose a successor to Jacque Chirac, who is stepping down after 12-years in office. There are four candidates to choose from.

cbc. New research in the US suggests cutting salt intake may reduce your risk of heart disease by 25 per cent. Participants in the study cut their salt intake by 25-to-35 percent.

cbc. A charity auction for musicians who lost their instruments during hurricane Katrina raised $2.7 million. Items sold at the Icons of Music auction included a guitar once played by Jimi Hendrix, and items donated by the rock band U2.

yahoo. Punk icon Iggy Pop celebrated his 60th birthday by stripping down to his blue jeans at a San Francisco concert and diving off the stage. Pop is touring again with his legendary band, The Stooges.
